Another week in port and another project done. I have finally moved the chart plotter from the nav station to the helm. Moving the chart plotter was easy, it’s the mounting and routing of cables that took a very long time. Originally the idea was to be able to sit comfortably at the nav station in any weather to do the chart work, planning and track vessels. As I have shifted to sailing alone I still worked with the paper charts all the time at the helm and just used the chart plotter as a check tool.
It has just become easier to use the plotter at the helm since I am now always sailing alone. Mostly when coming in to a strange harbor or creek late at night the plotter saves chart time allowing me to concentrate on ship handling. The space at the helm is getting utilized to a point where not many more items can be added.
