Quiet days and stormy nights, the story of my life!

by @ 2:29 am. Filed under The Captain
There are just a few indicators in life that are basically guaranteed to be true. Like the ice running out the day before making land fall, and blondes on power boats, we, us sailors just know and can tell the future by key indicators.

When the storm starts with hail, then it is going to be a tough one! Last night that is exactly what happened, and it always happens at night. Like the sound of the concrete being chipped away by live fire the storm last night started with a vengeance, hail and lots of it.  The wind came next, but Ariosa has been through that before. We sat at dock in Carolina beach one night when the gusts hit 98 MPH, we were healed over 15 degrees on bare poles alone. Last night was strong but no where near that. Still between the monsoon rains and the hail sounding like shrapnel it was a restless night.

There are many of those lately, mostly because to play during the day you have to work during the night. So call it a alternative schedule, or an understanding boss,  or maybe a time shift but the long nights are back! The days are simple, some even sunny, but mostly its coffee early and a long noon nap. The afternoons are shopping and maybe a drink at the club. The evenings are sitting and working on…..well work, making money, doing the job……

Lately the days have been cleaning and stowing, and I am there! Finished for the moment, and then cleaning up another mess from a project. You know you have gotten a handle on the stowage when you look for areas to open, drag out and sort. You find all kinds of things bought and paid for but long forgotten.

Maybe the weekend will be clear and I can get a day of sailing in. Me the deck harness and a 45 footer, wouldn’t that be fun. I could leave behind the life I have, and once again stand where I should be. I can leave behind the daily work, the social life, the leadership and the management, and just be me. One man, one boat and a horizon I have yet to cross. Ahhh what a dream, just to untie the bonds to land and to sail away.

She, her, it, the boat, like a love I have missed for years………they will never understand. I never knew the ocean till I was 18, I have never left it since, it is my home, on it under it, in it…….aka Buffet

“Mother, Mother ocean, I have heard your call.

Wanted to sail upon your waters, since I was three feet tall,

You’ve seen it all, you’ve seen it all.

Watched the men who rode you, switch from sail to steam,

In you belly you can hold the treasures few have ever seen,

Most of the dreams, Most of them dreams……

Yes I am a a pirate, two hundred years to late,

The cannons don’t thunder, nothing to plunder,

I’m a over forty victim of fate,

arriving too late, arriving too late………”

The song has been sung for years and each verse tells a different story, me and the sea, my love for the sea and the women who have graced me in life with their presence.

Buffet probably said it best…..”Although I’ve run them away they’ll come back one day, still can manage a smile, just takes a while, just takes a while.”

Surprise, surprise the captain guy is back, all the time now, maybe it’s just spring or maybe he has now where else to go………..

Well normally mister fix it need a wrench and a hammer, or maybe one tool that he uses for both….it looks like a crescent wrench but I think he calls it a crescent hammer….

Look at the forehead jutting out, the dull look in the eyes and you will just know it’s going to be another fix the mechanical day…but not today!

Well it’s blue, and like he actually got the color right so my top and bottom match, and he sprang for the good stuff too! Sunbrella….like in yards and yards…….well I am a big girl and there is a lot up top to cover. He made it himself! Which considering the possibility was not on MY list of ways to get it done, but maybe he just has the sewing stuff down…….

So maybe soon I can get a day out, and if he trims it up anymore on the sides the big boy Sea Ray in the next slip may be discharging overboard a bit early if ya get the meaning…..

Parts, parts, and more parts

by @ 12:52 am. Filed under Maintenance
New batteries, a couple of 4d’s and the main bank is done, the starting battery is now also replaced. The wind generator has been serviced, and the banks are charging nicely. All the hoses are connected, the parts have been sorted, installed or stowed and the boat is clean.

The refrigeration system is up and running, all major stuff is done except the new charger / inverter being installed to replace the old charger. That will take some time and prior planning. It will also require the installation of the four new internal and one new external DC switch panels. The wire will also have to be installed to support this branched system. The new main AC disconnect will have to be installed. Probably a shore / generator type switch.

Well  she sails well, but helm wheel lock needs some clearing, it does not lock tight enough. The sails needed a couple of stitches prior to putting them up. The auto helm control head was returned to Ray Marine and found to be unrepairable, guess its time for another. Now it is time for bed, rocked asleep by the wind.Moored port side to, pier C, slip 21 in a standard fore and aft cross moor, with three port spring lines, taking power and water shore services from the pier.039 Deg 09′ 12.5″ North Latitude

Home again home again….2006

Finally out of the yard and back at the dock. It was a late Wednesday run back around the corner from Oak Harbor to the club. Same slip as last year, and home again. Perfect weather for the short trip, and once again in the last moments of planning and trying to figure out how to move both boat and car that one of the brothers shows up to help without being asked. It must be the one amebic brain cell we all share…… One of us needs and one of the others call or just show up…….It was nice to spend a couple of hours drinking beer and having dinner with my older brother after the move. So it was a good dinner, great conversation and a chance to catch up on the little things in life. The boat is not even in shape to sleep onboard…… so off to home.

Wednesday ends and Thursday begins early getting work done as early as possible, then lunch with the boss and off again to the boat. The boat was a mess after the yard, it’s always like that. Sand everywhere from the yard, and everything piled high. You have to get into the tight little corners to get most of the work done and that seems to be where I store spare parts and equipment. So everything gets pulled out and piled on any surface, the work gets done and the parts get sorted, inventoried and put back away. I hate to think of the stuff at home that still has to be brought back down to the boat.

Thursday is a plumbing day, hooking up valve to hoses and making water systems come back to life. The day ends with two working heads, and a check showing no leaks on any of the hull valves that I just replaced! The reward is being able to have “a” beer and then sleeping the sleep of the just, onboard the boat.

Friday starts with a work morning, I mean a real job work morning, getting the stuff from the day before done. Finally back to boat work at two…….

Just because the yard period is over does not mean the work is done. The boat has to be scrubbed inside and out, and many systems are still OOC (Out of Commission) or reduced because all the new parts are not connected or tested yet. Sails still have to be checked, stitched and hung, and all systems tested and verified working. The new speed sensor for the Ray marine, and the new Ray marine fathometer transducer have to be hooked up. two of the three heads have been plumbed into the new sea valves. One more head has to be done. The auto helm system is going be refurbished or replaced.

Yesterday was the forward cabin and the main saloon. Both now are almost back to shape, not quite ready to go to sea but closer. I have 2 hours of cleaning and scrubbing in each of the aft stateroom and they will be cleaned for the summer. I have maybe 2 more hours in each of the aft stateroom and they will be ready for sea.
